Establishment and History of The Department
Department of Biology was established on June 26th, 1990. Students were admitted to the undergraduate program in the 1991-1992 Academic Year and the first graduates were in July 1995. Students were admitted to the evening education program in the 1992-1993 Academic Year, and student admission to this program was discontinued in the 2012-2013 academic year.

Job Opportunities for Graduate Students
More than a thousand students have graduated from our department so far and some of them work as lecturers in different universities. Most of them work as teachers in primary and secondary education. Moreover, we have a lot of graduates employed in health institutions. Since Biology is closely related to Pharmacy, Food Engineering, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Agriculture, our students are provided with the necessary knowledge and experience in order to enable them to work in these fields. Since the Spring Semester 2010, our students have also started to take teaching formation courses in order to take the opportunity to receive teaching formation certificate.
Laboratory and Research Areas
We have a large number of students who continue or graduated from Master's and PhD degree programs with or without thesis at Erciyes University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. Research and student laboratories of our department have a modern infrastructure. The laboratories in our department have the appropriate infrastructure and technological equipment to carry out advanced researches and to enable the students to perform practical applications related to the courses. Projects supported by GEF, FAO, TÜBİTAK, DPT and Erciyes University are carried out by the academic staff of the Biology department with the participation of students, and cooperation with universities, research laboratories and centers at the national and international level is maintained.
Our department has progressed in terms of research opportunities throughout its history and has a very extensive research laboratory infrastructure. Lots of research projects are carried out in these laboratories. Laboratory facilities are improving day by day and research projects are carried out in the fields of Plant and Animal Systematics, Biochemistry, Biological Control, Ecology, Genetic Engineering, Hydrobiology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. More than a hundred articles in these fields have been published in journals scanned in international indexes and studies are ongoing. On average, three publications can be produced per faculty member per year. In addition, developing university-industry cooperation and solving the problems of our country's people and integrating the university with society are among our most important goals.
In our department, there are 8 scientific research laboratories, 1 herbarium, 3 student laboratories, 6 classrooms, 1 meeting room with modern equipment. Computer and internet facilities are available in all classrooms, and interactive course resources, animation and video images are used in performing the courses.
There are opportunities to prepare our students for graduate education in research laboratories and to train them as researchers. A wide range of compulsory and elective courses in different fields of biology are taught in the undergraduate and graduate programs of our department.
